COACh was founded in 1997 by a group of women senior chemistry faculty who recognized that talented scientists often faced barriers that limited career advancement and leadership opportunities. In response, COACh launched its first professional development programs in 1999, providing practical tools and strategies to help scientists navigate critical career transitions and succeed in increasingly complex professional environments.

As demand grew, COACh expanded beyond chemistry to serve scientists and engineers across disciplines, including physics, mathematics, computer science, engineering, and the life sciences. Since 2011, COACh has extended its reach internationally, partnering with institutions and organizations around the world to strengthen scientific leadership and career development, particularly in developing regions.

Today, COACh draws upon the expertise of distinguished scientists, engineers, and professional development specialists who bring decades of experience from academia, industry, government, and nonprofit organizations.
